the red bag
The Red Bag has been places.
It was conceived in the summer of 1998.
Maybe a summer like any summer.
But for me a couple of things made a difference.
There was a lot of blood in the news, usual, if it was your usual crimestories, but there was more to it.
There was war on the footsteps of Vienna and there was a war of words over the work of an artist involving blood.
Both I could have ignored.
One, by switching off the TV, the other, by simply turning to the sports pages.
The war, while it couldn’t be heard in Vienna, could be seen in the faces of those, who came as refugees.
They didn’t come on foot, they were not boatpeople, they didn’t cross the Sahara, they were not airlifted in the middle of the night.
They came by cars, trains and yes, planes, since Vienna was only an hour away.
So close and yet so far away.
The war of words, involving blood, was more about what wasn’t said, than about an open discussion, so that maybe everyone could have a chance to understand and form one’s own opinion.
At issue was birth and death, something very common in everyone’s life, not even footsteps away.
Curtains closed, curtains open.
Enter The Red Bag.

London , Paris, Zakynthos, Tuscany, Santorin, Havana, Antibes, Lille, Graz, Vienna, over and over again.
Evelin, Anastasia, Hanna, Almut, Gunnar, Wolfgang, Abey, Joy, Amanda, Stuart, Patricia, Agathe, Glauber, Gerburg, Martina, Robert, Thomas, Tina, The Twelve Famous Men, Rodenstock,.....
It grew, it went through many hands.
It became an icon, a myth, a mask.
Questions about it were asked and it raised questions.
Questions were answered, questions remained questions, to be answered later or to remain questions.
The Red Bag will continue to be photographed, appear in exhibitions, feature in videos and films and be built.
Give its name to products, venues, events.
Raise questions, give answers.
Always leading back to the photographs that made it visible and leading to new photographs that make it more visible.
An endless cycle, war and peace, from birth to death, till maybe we have found some new answers about life.

hans fleischner
geboren in Wien, studierte hier Fotografie in den späten 60er-Jahren. Nach Abschluß seiner Ausbildung führte es ihn zuerst in die U.S.A, wo er mehrere Jahre arbeitete und lebte. Danach zog es ihn auf die andere Seite des Erdballs nach Asien. Hier lebte er über 20 Jahre, wobei er sein Know-how in den Bereichen Fotografie und Film noch weiter ausbaute. Sein Hauptquartier war Tokio, aber seine Jobs führten ihn unter anderem auch nach Bali, Indien und auf die Philippinen. Nach der Rückkehr in seine Heimatstadt Wien in den späten 90er-Jahren konzentrierte er sich auf seine künstlerischen Projekte.

In Niki Witoszynskyjs Arbeiten spielen die sorgsam ausgewählten Locations eine wichtige Rolle. Sie bieten den Rahmen indem er seine von der Strasse weggecasteten Modells wirken läßt. Die Räume im Hintergrund erzählen eine Geschichte in der er seine körperlichen Poitraits in ihrer Natürlichkeit ins rechte Bild setzt. Niki Witoszynskyj zeigt eine Auswahl aus den letzten 15 Jahren.

niki witoszynskyj
geboren 1967 in Wien, aufgewachsen mit allen musikalischen Kinderkrankheiten, wie Blockflöte, Klavier, Gitarre, ... und Schlagzeug. Seit dem 16. Lebensjahr daher in diversen Bands an der Bassgitarre, und als Frontman in der eigenen Band „Solar“ im Studio und auf der Bühne (über 50 Konzerte) aktiv. 1989 Abschluss der Graphischen Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt als Fotograf.
